ARTEFACTUS HISTORY

Artefactus Cultural Project was founded on March 21, 2008, beginning its activities with "Artefactus Magazine". This electronic magazine has been the key in the dissemination of the theatrical activity in Miami. Artefactus Magazine is also an electronic archive that produces and maintains information related to Hispanic literature and theater produced in Miami.

Play reading of the work ''Ifigeniainmóvil''/''Ifigenia Immobile'' by Eddy Díaz Souza, with the special participation of actors Lida Morales, Leandro Peraza, Catalina Arenas, José Carlos Bermejo, and Fernando Goicochea, within the framework of the XVII Latin American Festival of Monologues.

The group ''Troop of Actors'' in collaboration with Artefactus presented the show ''Cuentos y poemas de La Edad de Oro''/''Tales and Poems of The Golden Age'', celebrating the 165th anniversary of José Martí birth. The activity was developed within the program ''Tardes de teatro para niños''/''Theater Evenings for Children''.

Premiere of the play ''Kikirikí/''Kakaru'', a production of Zunzun Arts & Education, with original music by Rita Rosa Ruesga and Michael Gil, special performance by Leandro Peraza, illustrations by Jorge Luis Mendoza and direction by Eddy Díaz Souza.

The second of the Music Laboratory, conducted by Michael Gil, in which instruments were exposed and the audience was moved to explore the textures and sounds. Michael Gil managed to captivate his audience for three hours, in which he talked, instructed and gave a very special concert for the whole family.

The program ''Theater Evenings for Children '' presented a varied program that included the short work ''Molinos''/''Mills'', the play ''Las Medias de los Flamencos''/''The Flamenco Socks'', and tales told using the ''Kamishibai'' Japanese technic.

The program ''Autores''/''Authors'' had as guest the writer Julie de Grandy, who was interviewed by the playwright Jorge Carrigan. In a dynamic play reading, her work ''No despierten a Mel Gibson''/''Do not Wake Up Mel Gibson'' was made known, in the voices of Daisy Fontao, Catalina Arenas, Jocelyn Lovos, and Fernando Goicochea.

The third edition of the program ''MiniTeatro''/''MiniTheater'' was executed in this period, a laboratory of artistic creation aimed at children between 6 and 12 years old, in which the participants, including parents and teachers, were involved in the elaboration of a staging. This workshop ended with the staging of the play ''Habíaotravez''/''Once Upon Time Again'', and was sponsored by Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs andCuatrogatos Foundation.

Artefactus participated in the ''XII Festival de Teatro del Tercer Amor''/''XII Theater Festival of Third Love'', held in San Juan, Puerto Rico, with the play ''Mal tiempo y un poemasombrío''/''Bad Weather and a Dark Poem'', written and directed by Eddy Díaz Souza, with the actors Leandro Peraza and Marcial Reyes, and choreography by Belkis Proenza. This staging received the Best Actor (Leandro Peraza) and Best Artistic Direction (Eddy Díaz Souza) awards.

The organizations ''La Casa del Teatro'' and Artefactus celebrated the III LGBTQ Scene Festival, dedicated to the playwright Raúl de Cárdenas. The Festival brought together a significant group of local creators and groups.

On March 4, ''Gas enlosporos''/''Gas in the Pores'' by Matías Montes Huidobrowas premiered, with performances by Daisy Fontao, Belkis Proenza, and Leandro Peraza. The critic HabeyHechavarría wrote about this montage: "... Gas in the Pores, as a depuration ceremony, goes beyond the circumstances of his gestation period (...), and even overcomes the aesthetic alibi of its structuring in order to rise as a proto- scenic maybe for all time." This production participated in the VII Hispanic Theater Festival of New York, organized by the Dominican Commissioner of Culture. The actress Daisy Fontao received the Best Actress award of the Latin Entertainment Critics Association of New York. The group also won the Hispanic Organization of Latin Actors (HOLA) awards for this staging, and female acting for the actresses Daisy Fontao and Belkis Proenza. It also received the special award ''Latin Alternative Theater'' for acting, direction and production.

The program ‘’Autores’’/’’Authors’’ presented the playwright Ulises Rodríguez Febles, with the special participation of Dainerys Machado and actors Grethel Delgado, Lida Morales, Leandro Peraza and, Lisandro Vázquez, who read the play ''Criatura de Isla''/’’Island Creature’’ written by Rodríguez.

From the 7th to the 11th of December Artefactus participated in the first edition of the FUERZAfest Festival, in Orlando (Florida), organized by the Hispanic Federation, with the support of Orlando Opera and We are Orlando Project, among other organizations. The festival, directed by Mario Colón, was dedicated to the victims and survivors of the Pulse Club, generating, in parallel, a space for art and reflection on the rights and particularities of the LGBTQ community. In this first edition, the FUERZAfest jury awarded the Best Actress award to Yani Martin, interpreter of ''El últimobolero''/''The Last Bolero'' by playwriters Cristina Rebull and Iliana Prieto, under direction by Eddy Díaz Souza and production by ''La Casa del Teatro''. Artefactus won the awards: Best actor for Leandro Peraza, Best direction for Eddy Díaz Souza and Best work for ''Mal tiempo y un poemasombrío''/''Bad Weather and a Dark Poem'', by Díaz Souza, which also featured the performance by YunierLópez, choreography by Romina Musach and production by Carlos Arteaga.

Artefactus and ''La Casa del Teatro'' produced the play ''El últimobolero''/''The Last Bolero'', by Cristina Rebull and Iliana Prieto, with scenography by Carlos Artime, and performances by Belkis Proenza and Yani Martin. In this month the drama ''Mal tiempo y un poemasombrío''/''Bad Weather and a Dark Poem'', written and directed by Eddy Díaz Souza, with performances by Leandro Peraza y YunierLópez, and choreography by Romina Musach, was also presented.

After an intense tour through New York and Washington, the show ''El gallito que no podíacantar''/''The Little Rooster that Could not Sing'' was presented in Artefactus theater, written by Rita Rosa Ruesga and Eddy Díaz Souza. The assembly had live music and special performances by Leandro Peraza and Alegnis Castillo, with puppets by JomartéHiguerey.

The play ''Mañana es una palabra''/''Tomorrow is a Word'' participated in the VI International Festival of Hispanic Theater, organized by the Dominican Commissioner in New York. This staging received the awards of the Latin Entertainment Critics Association of New York (ACE, 2017) for the Best Visiting Production, Best Dramaturgy (Eddy Diaz Souza) and Best Actor (Leandro Peraza). This production also received the prizes of the Independent Theater Artists Association (ATI 2017) for Best Production for Tour Theater and Best Direction (Eddy Diaz Souza)

The second edition of the program ''MiniTeatro''/''MiniTheater'' was executed in this period, a laboratory of artistic creation aimed at children between 6 and 12 years old, with the support of the community and cultural organizations such as The Knight Foundation, Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs, Cuatrogatos Foundation and FUNDarte. This program, given by a group of specialists in the areas of literature, acting, dance, music and visual arts, ended on August 28 with the staging of the play ''El País de losSueños''/''The Country of Dreams''.

On May 30th, the Cuban Theater Day in Exile was once again celebrated, this time with the play reading of ''Restos''/''Ruins'', by Eddy Díaz Souza, with performances by Belkis Proenza, Engie Camila, and Carlos Rivero.

The first edition of the program ''MiniTeatro''/''MiniTheater'' was executedin this period, a laboratory of artistic creation aimed at children between 6 and 12 years old, in which the participants, including parents and teachers, were involved in the elaboration of a staging. The result of this first experience became a fun scenic toy titled ‘’Cumpleañosen la selva’’/''Birthday in the Jungle''. This project was sponsored by The Knight Foundation, FUNDarte and Cuatrogatos Foundation.

Premiere of the work ‘’Mañanaesunapalabra’’/''Tomorrow is a Word'', from the Nora Badía's text, with dramaturgy and direction by Eddy Díaz Souza, and performances by Belkis Proenza, Marcia Arencibia, Jorge Ovies, and Angelo Jamaica. Commented the critic Jose Abreu Felippe in his column of El Nuevo Herald: "With much ingenuity and originality, Diaz Souza moves the characters and gives life not only to the broadcast of a radio novel, including commercials of the time, some still very remembered and enjoyed by the Cubans, but also draws between the lines, how Havana was like in the 1940s.

Presentation of the show ''Cantos y cuentos de Lluvia''/''Lluvia's Songs and Tales'', as part of the program ''Tardes de teatro para niños''/''Theater Evenings for Children'', performanced by actress and singer CoraliaTorrealba. The actress presented puppets, songs and stories related to the protection of the environment, recycling, respect for diversity, tolerance and friendship.

November 19th. Tribute to the playwright Pedro Monge Rafuls (Placetas, 1943), in his 72 birthday. The evening was hosted by speakers Carolina Caballero (Tulane University) and Jorge Febles (University of North Florida). He was also joined by Marelys Valencia (University of Miami), playwright Jorge Carrigan, and actors Daisy Fontao, Marcia Arencibia, Leandro Peraza, and Déxter Cápiro.

Artefactus was nominated to the ''People's Choice Award'' by The Knight Foundation. Artefactus also won The Knight Foundation´s Arts Challenge Award with the project ''MiniTeatro''/''MiniTheater''.

The writer José Abreu Felippe wrote for ''El Nuevo Herald'': ´´Lie to me'' is a high level show, that nobody who enjoys and loves the theater should get lost, even if you have to go to the end of the world.

The evening featured a select group of artists and intellectuals, including his wife Yara Montes, Rolando Morelli, Carolina Caballero, Orlando Rossardi, and Ernesto Fundora. The works wereread by Yvonne LópezArenal, Orquídea Gil, Ivette Kellems, Vivian Morales, TomásDoval, Abel Berenguer, Christian Ocón, Leandro Peraza and José Manuel Domínguez.
