Approaching the work of the famous Canadian writer Margaret Atwood (Ottawa, 1939) could be compared to the practice of a tightrope walker, in which the freedom and complacency of the journey are not without risk. This has been the premise that the actors Miriam Bermúdez, Belkis Proenza, Oneysis Valido, José Luis Pérez, Arsenio Díaz in the music and Eddy Díaz Souza in the direction have taken as their banner, to address and give theatrical body to a set of stories from this writer.
Atwood, who achieved international notoriety with The Handmaid’s Tale, is also the author of the novels: The Edible Woman, Alias Grace and The Testaments, among others. She has published poetry, theater, essays and children’s stories. In 2008 she received the Prince of Asturias Award. She is a member of the Royal Society of Literature of the United Kingdom and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
Margaret’s writing is permeated with lyricism and wit; also of irony, good humor and familiar universes that seem like dystopian realities. The recurring themes in her literature take on new heights in this setting: the feminine condition, human rights, freedom of expression, ecology… And, at the center of everything, the word, the one that builds, (re)creates, gives color and textures to this show whose title is: “One word, after another word, after another word is power”, a phrase from the writer.
Returning to the Story Dinner format, Artefactus ventures into the construction of a theatrical production that mixes stories by Atwood and the Polish writer, Slawomir Mrozek, fragments of interviews and live music, performed by sitarist Arsenio Díaz.
The season of “A word, after another word…” will take place at Artefactus Black Box, from March 12 to 28 (Fridays and Saturdays, 8:30 p.m.; Sundays, 3:00 p.m.).
